Just-in-Time Teaching (or "JiTT" for short) is a technique in teaching and learning that uses the internet to extend classroom instruction.
Here are some objectives of JiTT:
promote critical thinking
active learning
collaborative learning
provide learners with prompt feedback (through formative assessment)
provide real-world relevance
increase contact between instructors & learners
The key feature of JiTT is the feedback loop between the classroom and the internet as shown in the diagram below.
Below is a brief description of the processes involved with JiTT:
Course material is put online for learners to access prior to classroom teaching.
Pre-lesson assignments are designed for students to accomplish prior to classroom teaching.
These assignment are uploaded for the instructor to review before the lesson.
Instructor will design his/her lesson according to the student responses from their assignment.
During lesson, instructor will tease out the misconceptions as perceived by students from their responses.
Instructor will end off the lesson by probing students to think about the relevance of the subject matter with the real world.
Students return to the internet during or after the lesson to look for real-world relevance and answer a series of post-lesson assignment which contains real-world examples.
The post-assignment responses may become the basis for the next lesson's instruction, thereby completing the JiTT feedback loop.
What is expected of the learners?
Completion and punctual submission of pre-lesson and post-lesson assignments (because your response will become the basis of the subsequent lesson).
Active classroom participation (because classroom time serves to clear up misconceptions).
Give valued feedback to how the course may be improved for your needs.
